A number of houses in a Co Tyrone town were evacuated for several hours today after what police described as a “viable” explosive device was found.

The device was found in the Burns Road area of Cookstown. The area was sealed off while it was made safe by a British army bomb disposal unit.

Earlier today, an area of Strabane, Co Tyrone was also sealed off during a security operation.

Meanwhile, the PSNI has declared a suspect device that caused the overnight closure of the Newry-Warrenpoint dual carriageway a hoax. The device has been removed for further examination.
