U.S. stocks opened higher today, as some investors anticipate buying shares beaten down after three straight down sessions, though sentiment remains fragile as traders kept an anxious eye on geopolitical events.

The Dow Jones industrial average opened up 25.37 points, or 0.25 per cent, at 10,090.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 2.52 points, or 0.23 per cent, to 1,097.92.

The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index gained 14.15 points, or 0.74 per cent, to 1,924.05.

Goldman Sachs Group grabbed headlines before the open, after it reported higher quarterly earnings, driven by strong revenue from stock and bond trading and its leadership position as a mergers and acquisitions adviser.

Shares of Goldman, one of Wall Street's top investment banks, rose to $103.55 on the INET electronic brokerage, up from their close of $101.30 on the New York Stock Exchange.
