An American soldier has been killed in a grenade attack in Iraq.
A spokeswoman for the 4th Infantry Division, Maj Josslyn Aberle, said the attack on a armoured vehicle happened late last night near Baiji, north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
Soldiers returned fire and several people had been held for questioning after the attack, Maj Aberle said.
Since coalition forces invaded Iraq in March, 513 US soldiers have died in the country, at least 355 of them to hostile fire.
