WASHINGTON - Key US senators tried yesterday to head off a potential confrontation with Mexico on its anti drug efforts as administration officials argued that its record had improved.

At the same time the House of Representatives Rules Committee cleared the way for a house vote as early today on overturning President Clinton's finding that Mexico is cooperating fully with the US over the supply of drugs.
