US warplanes bombed targets near the house of radical Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in the holy city of Najaf today, witnesses said.
They said plumes of black smoke billowed as marines battling militiamen in the area exhanged heavy fire.
There was no immediate word on whether the cleric was at the house.
