WASHINGTON-The US has "some evidence" that Russia carried out a nuclear test in January, the Defence Secretary, Mr William Perry, said yesterday.

"There is some evidence on the subject," Mr Perry told a hearing of the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee. However he said he preferred to discuss the issue behind closed doors.

The Washington Times reported that Russia carried out an underground test in January, breaking the moratorium Moscow has observed for four years.
