US forces killed a reporter working for the US-funded Iraqiya Television along with his driver today north of Baghdad, the victims' colleagues said.

They said a cameraman was also injured in the attack in the city of Samarra, 100 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad. The US military said it had no information on the deaths.

"Early information say US forces shot them while they were in their car," said an Iraqiya journalist.

Dubai's Al Arabiya television named the dead journalist as As'ad Kathem.

Local and international media organisations have criticised the conduct of US forces in Iraq, saying more care should be taken to protect journalists.

At least six other journalists have been killed by US forces in Iraq since the US-led war began.
