MEXICO CITY - The US anti-drugs chief, Gen Barry McCaffrey, and the US Acting National Security Adviser, Mr Samuel Berger, made a surprise trip to Mexico City yesterday to express Washington's commitment to stronger ties with Mexico in all spheres including the war on drugs.

Accompanied by President Clinton's special adviser for Latin America, Mr Thomas McClarty, they met President Ernesto Zedillo.
