A transatlantic flight had to divert to Shannon Airport today after a passenger became unruly.

The Austrian Airlines jet carrying 180 passengers was en route from Washington to Vienna when it landed at Shannon at about 7am.

Gardaí said a 32-year-old man had been restrained by passengers after becoming unruly.

Gardaí met the flight on the ground and took the man, believed to be an Austrian national, into custody.

He was being held under the Air, Navigation and Transport Act.
