Police and firemen were poised early today to help prison officers deal with unrest at Full Sutton high security jail, near York, a Prison Service spokesman said.

The disorder at the prison - which houses a number of IRA prisoners - began with minor acts of vandalism at around 6 p.m. Prison officers had not been able fully to re establish control, the spokesman added. He stressed that the situation had not escalated to riot level.
