The trade union Unite has said it will fight any move to cut the incomes of low-paid workers under changes to the joint labour committee (JLC) system.

Speaking at its policy conference in Dublin yesterday, its Irish regional secretary, Jimmy Kelly, said the union would defend the JLC system for setting pay rates in a number of sectors.

The Government is set to consider proposals aimed at changing the system.
