Colombo - Sri Lanka's children were worse off despite a UN initiative, the UN agency for children said, amid reports that Tamil Tiger rebels had escalated recruiting boys and girls as young as 10.

Unicef said the overall situation for Sri Lankan children caught up in the Tamil separatist conflict had deteriorated since a visit here by Mr Olara Otunnu, the UN special representative on children and armed conflict.
