Somali gunmen released a German United Nations worker unharmed after kidnapping him for 10 days, a U.N. spokeswoman said on Sunday, confirming an earlier report of his release made by a Somali militia group.

"He is released," said Sandra Macharia, a UN spokeswoman in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. "He is recuperating with his family in Nairobi."

She said Rolf Helmrich, 60, flew to Nairobi in a UN plane today after being handed over to UN officials in the southern Somali town of Kismayo yesterday.
