Paris - The United Nations agency UNESCO said yesterday it had awarded its $25,000 World Press Freedom Prize to imprisoned Nigerian journalist Christina Anyanwu.

"For nearly three years, Christina Anyanwu has been suffering extremely harsh prison conditions in a country where the independent press and freedom of information have almost disappeared," the head of the prize jury, Mr Claude Moisy, said in a statement.
