Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army rebels abducted 40 schoolchildren and killed a village chief in an attack in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the UN mission in Congo said today, quoting local officials.

More people were abducted in raids on two other villages this week, a spokesman for the UN mission said.

The Congolese army deployed hundreds of troops this month to contain the Ugandan rebels near its remote border with Uganda and Sudan.
