Two youths held after Athlone robbery

Two people were tied up and slashed with knives during a robbery at a house in Athlone, Co Westmeath early this morning.

Two people were tied up and slashed with knives during a robbery at a house in Athlone, Co Westmeath early this morning.

A 20-year-old man and a woman in her late teens were in the house at Roslevin Lawns at around 12.15am when two youths broke in and assaulted them before tying them up.

The couple received knife wounds during the incident. They were taken to  Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe for treatment to minor injuries and were later released.

The raiders made off with what a Garda spokesman said was a "small amount of property".

Two youths were later arrested. They are being held at Athlone Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
