A mother and daughter pleaded not guilty to burglary at the home of a Co Galway murder victim, Mr Tommy Casey, when their trial opened in Galway yesterday.

Mrs Kathleen Connors (55), Greenfields, Newcastle, Galway, and her daughter, Ms Alison Connors (21), of Lurgoe, Killenaule, Co Tipperary, both denied entering the home of the retired farmer at Oranbeg, Oranmore, on January 15th last with intent to steal.

Outlining the case before Judge Raymond Groarke at Galway Circuit Criminal Court, Mr Peter Charleton SC, prosecuting, said the charge against the women related to burglary at Mr Casey's home. The prosecution was not saying the defendants were responsible for his death.

After a jury was sworn in, Judge Groarke advised the jurors that "certain legal matters" had arisen as a result of which the trial could not continue.
