Two women die in Tyrone fire

A mother and daughter have died in a house fire in Northern Ireland.

A mother and daughter have died in a house fire in Northern Ireland.

The blaze at the flat at Dunlea Vale, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, started at around 10pm last night.

The victims were Deirdre McGirr (38), and Elizabeth McGirr (71), police said. A man aged in his 30s escaped from the house without injury.

Police are investigating the circumstances.

Nationalist SDLP chair of the party’s Dungannon branch, Denise Fox, expressed sympathy for the family.

“This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the family and friends of the two women who lost their lives in this blaze,” she said.

“There is an overwhelming sense of sadness in Dungannon at this news and the thoughts of the community are with those close to the deceased.

“I appeal for people to take precautions to remain fire safe in their homes to lower the risk of an awful tragedy like this happening again.”
