A mother and daughter died in a house fire in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, on Saturday night. Elizabeth McGirr was 71, while Deirdre McGirr was 38. A man in his 30s escaped.

The flat at Dunlea Vale was engulfed in flames after 10pm on Saturday.

Local Sinn Féin councillor Bronwyn McGahan said the local community was “deeply shocked”, adding that the family was well-known and liked in the area.

“We just don’t know how or why this happened. It was a very intense fire,” said Ms McGahan

Police are investigating the circumstances.

A police spokesman said: “At this stage police are appealing to anyone who noticed any unusual activity in the area or who has any information to contact Dungannon CID.”
