Two Polish troops were killed and five were injured early today when their vehicles crashed as they were trying to escape an ambush.

The troops were on a road patrol when their convoy came under fire around 7.15 a.m. local time in the city of Hillah, south-central Iraq. Two Polish vehicles sped up to escape and crashed into one another

The five injured were taken to a US army hospital in Baghdad and are in a stable condition.

Troops were sent to the site of the ambush but could not find the attackers, the Polish state news agency PAP reported.
