Gardaí from Longford are investigating a single vehicle accident which occurred at Bally- league, Lanesboro, shortly before 5am yesterday.

A 25-year-old man was fatally injured when the car he was driving hit a tree. He was taken to Roscommon hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Also yesterday a teenager was killed following a road accident on the M1 near Drogheda, Co Meath.

According to gardaí, the accident occurred at about 3.45pm and involved two vehicles and a pedestrian on the M1 between the Monasterboice and Slane exits.

The male pedestrian was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, but died from his injuries.

The occupants of both the vehicles were also taken to hospital but later released.

The man was the 221st person to die on the State's roads so far this year.
