Two women died last night after being struck by a car in the Ballyfermot area of west Dublin.

Two women died last night after being struck by a car in the Ballyfermot area of west Dublin.

The women, who are French nationals in their 50s, were knocked down on the Kylemore Road just before 11.00pm. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

A man in his 20s was arrested and taken to Ballyfermot Garda Station where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Kylemore Road has been closed between the Bluebell Avenue and Landon Road junctions until further notions.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident.

A total of 134 people have died on the State's roads so far this year.
