A search is underway for two fishermen missing off the Dublin coast tonight.

It is understood a boat with two men aboard left Skerries Harbour at 11am and the alarm was raised shortly after 6.30pm when they failed to return to port.

A spokesman for Dublin Coast Guard said debris identified to the vessel was located approximately halfway between Skerries and Rockabill Island.

He said the Howth and Skerries lifeboats are currently searching the area. They were joined earlier by the Dublin Coast Guard rescue helicopter but this has since returned to base.

Another lifeboat from Clogherhead is on route to join the search.
