Two crew were yesterday rescued from a sinking inshore fishing boat off Salthill, Co Galway.

The Galway RNLI inshore lifeboat and several fishing boats participated in the rescue after an alert was raised at about 2pm.

The men’s boat began taking water after it broke down and was under tow to shore. There was a southwesterly wind force five to six in the area at the time.

The RNLI crew put an emergency pump on board the vessel to keep it afloat, and brought it back to Galway docks. The men were brought ashore by another fishing vessel.

Galway lifeboat operations manager Mike Swan said the owner of the boat was very fortunate, and he paid tribute to other craft in the vicinity which had assisted.
