Two people have died in crashes today that involved motorbikes in the west of the country.

In Co Mayo, a single-vehicle collision at Clootumper, Ballyhaunis, shortly after 2am. A 30-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene after the bike on which she was a pillion passenger hit a sign, a Garda spokesman said.

The 26-year-old male driver was taken to Castlebar hospital. His injuries are not believed to be serious, gardaí said.

Road diversions are in place locally and anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Swinford Garda station.

Elsewhere, gardaí at Gort are investigating a crash involving a motorcycle on a minor road at Cahercon, Kinvarra, Co Galway, at 12.25pm today.

The rider (34) was pronounced dead at the scene, and his remains have been taken to University College Hospital Galway.

The road is currently closed for technical examination and diversions are in place. Witnesses are asked to contact Gort Garda Station on 091-636400 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
