Two South American women are in custody following the seizure of drugs worth an estimated €1 million in Dublin yesterday.

The women, aged 23 and 44 years, were arrested during the search of a room in a hotel on the north side of the city shortly after 6pm. Fourteen kilos of cocaine were seized by gardai during the operation.

The illegal drugs, estimated to have a street value of €1 million, were initially detected in Dublin Airport by officials from the Revenue’s Customs Service.

Gardai, who say they believe the drugs were destined for the Irish market, have not identified the hotel in question or the nationalities of the arrested women.

The women are being held at Finglas Garda Station under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act and can be detained for a total of seven days.

Garda values placed on drug seizures are approximate and are subject to forensic analysis of the drugs.
