A mother and her young son escaped a malicious house fire in south Belfast unhurt, police said last night.

A mother and her young son escaped a malicious house fire in south Belfast unhurt, police said last night.

The fire started after flammable liquid was poured through the letterbox of the property at Walmer Street.

The house was smoke damaged. Detectives are investigating a motive and appealed for anybody with information to come forward.

A police spokeswoman said: “A woman in her 30s and her 11-year-old son were in the house at the time but managed to get out of the property. They were physically unharmed but shaken.”
