A middle-aged man was killed in a house fire in Ranelagh, Dublin last night. The alarm was raised shortly before 8.30 p.m. when neighbours saw smoke coming from the attic of the house on Beechwood Avenue Lower. Three units of the Donnybrook fire brigade fought the blaze.

The man, who was alone at the time of the fire, was taken to St Vincent's Hospital and was said to have died of smoke inhalation.

Gardai in Wexford are seeking witnesses to a fatal hit and run accident which took place at 9.30 p.m. about two miles north of Enniscorthy. A man in his 30s, from the locality, died after he was struck by a vehicle heading in the Enniscorthy direction on the N11.
