Two men appeared in court today charged with the attempted murder of a policewoman who was shot outside a pub in northern England.

Dog handler PC Katie Johnson (29) was shot outside the Hospital Inn pub in Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire, on New Year's Eve. She was taken to the hospital with pellets in her leg and has recovered.

Magistrates remanded Wayne McDonald (46) and David Tyrell (37) in custody to appear at Preston Crown Court on January 14th. The pair are also charged with robbery, firearms offences and false imprisonment.

A third man was arrested last night on suspicion of robbery in Kirkham, west of Preston.

Police said that a second officer was also violently threatened moments after his colleague was shot.
