A machine gun was one of two firearms recovered by gardaí when they arrested two men in west Wicklow this week.

The arrest of the men, aged 36 and 52, by gardaí in Baltinglass took place following the search of a van on Wednesday night.

In the course of that search a machine gun, handgun and a quantity of ammunition were recovered. The men were being detained for questioning at Baltinglass Garda station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Meanwhile, as part of a planned search in Tallaght, gardaí recovered two rifles and ammunition in a laneway at Killinarden.

The rifles were believed to have been taken in the course of a burglary in Wexford in 2009.
