The Dáil comes across as male-dominated and irrelevant, TV3 chief executive David McRedmond has told an Oireachtas committee.

The administration committee, which is chaired by Fianna Fáil's Ned O'Keeffe, is seeking increased TV coverage of proceedings in the Dáil, Seanad Éireann and Oireachtas committees.

Mr McRedmond said politics could be relevant if it was delivered in a "punchy" way, but said current Dáil proceedings did not appeal to his station's audience.

"It comes across as archaic, male-dominated, long-winded or in short not relevant," Mr McRedmond said.

Mr O'Keeffe said many issues covered by the Dáil were relevant and the committee was entitled to take exception to Mr McRedmond's remarks.
