Turkish helicopters have bombed villages in northern Iraq, according to Turkish media reports.

CNN Turk television, quoting Iraqi officials, said the villages were empty and that no one was killed.

Turkey has massed up to 100,000 troops along its border with Iraq for a possible operation against rebels of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

It claims the right of self-defence under international law to attack the PKK inside Iraqi territory.
