TOKYO - Rescue workers failed yesterday in their third attempt to blast away a giant, boulder to get to 20 people trapped in a collapsed road tunnel in northern Japan since the weekend.

The latest explosion chipped only a small portion of the 50,000 tonne slab which crashed through the roof of the tunnel on Saturday morning.
