LONDON - A man who was hit over the head with a truncheon while handcuffed yesterday received the highest damages award ever made against a British police force.

Mr Daniel Goswell (29), of Woolwich, south-east London, was awarded a record £302,000 sterling. The Metropolitan Police said it planned to appeal against the decision.
