Former England soccer international Paul Gascoigne was released from hospital today after being sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Hertfordshire police said he had approached a member of the public in Hemel Hempstead and appeared to be unwell and in an agitated state.

"Officers arrived and accompanied the man to hospital so he could be checked over.

"He was sectioned under the Mental Health Act", a police spokesperson said.

The troubled former Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers player was previously sectioned under the Act in February.

He spent more than a fortnight at Middleton St George Hospital, in Darlington, Co Durham, before being released.
