Warm tributes were paid to the former Church of Ireland Bishop of Tuam, the Right Rev John Duggan, at his funeral in Dublin yesterday.

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Walton Empey, said his care of people was the outstanding characteristic of Dr Duggan. The Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Robin Eames, also attended the service, as did the bishops of Tuam, Meath, Kilmore and Clogher.

For the Catholic Church, Father Michael Molloy represented the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary. In recognition of Dr Duggan's work with the Episcopal Church in Spain, the Bishop of Europe, the Right Rev Henry Scriven, also attended.

The chief mourners were Dr Duggan's wife Mary, son Brian and daughter Sheila.
