Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore has paid tribute to former Irish ambassador to the United Nations Mahon Hayes, who died on Monday.

Mr Hayes was “was one of Ireland’s most distinguished public servants”, Mr Gilmore said in a statement yesterday.

He played a “key role” in the negotiation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Mr Gilmore added.

Mr Hayes (81) died at home after a short illness.

His removal takes place tonight, arriving at the Holy Cross Church in Dundrum at 5pm, and his funeral takes place tomorrow after 10am Mass.
