Trawler catches fire off Co Mayo

A Spanish fishing vessel which caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean was being escorted up the west coast of Ireland.

A Spanish fishing vessel which caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean was being escorted up the west coast of Ireland.

The fire started in the engine room of the trawler when it was about 300 miles off Blacksod Bay in Mayo.

It was understood that the 14 crew members were unharmed. The damage to the vessel was unclear. The Malin Head Coastguard co-ordinated the rescue and the vessel was towed by two Spanish trawlers. The trawler may dock at Killybegs or return to Spain.
