THE Irish Traveller Movement said the Department of Education's lack of a coordinated response to the recommendations of the Task Force on the Travelling Community "is a "disgrace".

At a protest outside Leinster House yesterday, the group's co-ordinator, Mr Fintan Farrell, said one of the task force's main recommendations was the setting up of a traveller education service to co-ordinate sections within the Department dealing with travellers' educational needs. He criticised the Department's "lack of will to establish such a service".

The protest was also against the continuing embargo on new positions for visiting teachers with the traveller community, even though interviews were held in 1995, and the embargo on other posts in the area of disadvantage and special education had been removed.
