Well-known members of the transgender community Dr Lydia Foy and Panti are among some 40 contributors to a book celebrating the trans experience in Ireland.

Families of transgender people and anonymous voices from small rural communities are also among this collection of poetry, prose, artwork and photographs.

Touching the Surface: Trans Voices in Ireland was published yesterday by the Transgender Equality Network Ireland.

“This is a real first for Ireland,” said the network’s communications officer, Orlaith O’Sullivan. Transgender people had been “marginalised to the point of invisibility”. The book created a “lasting space that celebrates the great diversity of gender identity in Ireland”, she added.
