Iarnród Éireann has opened an investigation into how an intercity passenger train hit a van parked at a level crossing near Oranmore in Galway.

The 7.10am service from Dublin to Galway struck the vehicle, which was stopped at the Garraun crossing, earlier this morning.

Although the driver was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, nobody was injured.

An Iarnród Éireann spokesman said initial indications suggested the warning systems at the crossing were operating correctly.
