EADS co-chief executive Tom Enders says that tough cuts are needed at planemaker Airbus but that no decisions had yet been made.

A report in a German newspaper that 10,000 jobs might be threatened at Airbus by its planned cost-cutting programme was pure speculation, an EADS spokesman said.

It was reported that Mr Enders had said at a Berlin meeting that in the long term, Airbus would only keep plants where assembly takes place or where parts of planes such as the fuselage, wiring, wings or cockpit were made.

At least 10,000 employees would be affected, the paper said.

Yesterday, Germany's economy minister met the heads of Airbus's works council and said the government stood behind employees and was determined to protect German interests.
