Three people who were swept out to sea off the Co Donegal coast were rescued last night.

A Bundoran RNLI spokesman said two swimmers got into trouble in rough seas.

The pair and a passerby who entered the water to try to help them were then hit by a large wave and dragged out to sea.

The alarm was raised and the lifeboat was on the scene within minutes.

All three people were brought ashore and treated by members of the ambulance service. None required hospitalisation.
