Three million cigarettes seized

Over 3 million cigarettes were seized by customs officers in Co Wexford this morning.

Over 3 million cigarettes were seized by customs officers in Co Wexford this morning.

The cigarettes were hidden in a 40-foot container onboard a ferry which arrived into Rosslare Europort from France.

A lorry driver from Northern Ireland was questioned in connection with the discovery before being released.

Investigations involving other European enforcement agencies, are continuing in the matter.

Customs officers estimated that the potential loss to the Exchequer if the cigarettes would have been sold, would have been in the region of EUR1.2 million
