Early on Saturday morning, Dean Gilsenan (17) from Kilmainhamwood, Co Meath, was killed after his car went out of control and crashed at Mullinavalley, Moynalty, Kells, Co Meath, at 6.25am. Gardaí from Bailieboro are investigating the incident.

Gardaí also named the two men killed in separate accidents in Tipperary on Friday. Joseph Connors from Lacey Avenue, Templemore, died after being hit by a lorry on the Roscrea Road, Templemore. He was in his early sixties.

Michael Hassett (81) from Coosane, Birdhill, died following a three-car collision at Birdhill on Friday evening.

The National Safety Council (NSC) and An Garda Síochána have urged people to drive safely over the bank holiday weekend.

In the past five years 22 people have died and 516 have been injured in road accidents over this weekend.

NSC acting chief executive Alan Richardson said drivers should slow down, wear seat-belts on every trip and never drive under the influence of drink or drugs.

Assistant Garda Commissioner Eddie Rock said gardaí were out in force on national primary routes this weekend and were paying particular attention to routes close to pubs.
