A woman was today being treated in intensive care after a house fire in Co Laois.

A woman was today being treated in intensive care after a house fire in Co Laois.

Three people were injured in the blaze which broke out in the Lough Gate housing estate, Portarlington, around midnight.

It is understood a chip pan sparked the fire, which caused extensive smoke damage to the property.

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, while the third was rushed to Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore.

The woman remains in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.

A garda spokesman said the cause of the blaze was believed to be accidental and was not being investigated by officers.
