Three teenagers were charged today with the attempted murder of a man critically injured in an attack in Northern Ireland at the weekend.

The 29-year-old victim was left fighting for life after being found lying in a street in Coleraine, Co Derry, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He remains critically ill in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The teenagers, aged 16, 17 and 18, were arrested yesterday and are due to appear at Coleraine Magistrates' Court later, said a Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman.

Within hours of the attack in the town's Bannfield Street police said they wanted to speak to three men reported to have been seen in the area. They are believed to have been the same people who visited the Causeway Hospital in the town less than an hour after the attack to check on the victim's condition.

A fourth man was arrested but later released without charge.
