Three British soldiers died in Afghanistan today, the British Ministry of Defence said.

One soldier was killed and six injured by a landmine in southern Afghanistan.

A spokeswoman said five of the injured were in serious condition. The incident took place in the north of Helmand province, where Britain has about 4,000 troops as part of a NATO peace force.

A second soldier was killed in another clash in the province. The third fatality was a soldier who had been wounded in a previous clash last Friday and later died of his injuries
