GENEVA - Rebels now controlling almost half of Zaire have taken time out to ensure protection of threatened mountain gorillas in the east of the country, a leading expert on the animals said yesterday.

Ms Elizabeth Kemf of the Geneva based World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) said the security of the gorillas, of whom only some 620 survive in the wild, had improved since the insurgents seized the eastern border region.
