Thousands of homes have been left without electricity in the North after gale force winds brought down power lines.

Emergency ESB teams are attempting to restore power to parts of Donegal while teams from Northern Ireland Electricity are trying to repair damage to the network in parts of the six counties.

A NIE spokeswoman said the main problem was on the north coast where several thousand homes were without power.

"Our engineering teams have been out there since 6am trying to restore customers," she added.
